Davis Vision Presents New York Islanders "Literacy Day"

Players travel to 12 Elementary Schools, Encourage Reading and Writing

Plainview, NY (Dec. 21, 2007) -- Most parents recognize how vital good vision is to their children's development – especially for reading – and, as children grow and mature, how much of what they learn is processed through their eyes.

"Reading and writing is important in all aspects of life. Whether you're a hockey player, teacher or doctor, you have to be able to read and write in order to succeed." This is the message that members of the New York Islanders hockey team delivered recently to elementary school students as part of the team’s Second Annual Literacy Day, presented by Davis Vision and Sharpe.

Islander players spoke to students at 12 different elementary schools across Nassau and Suffolk Counties in New York. In addition, the team held a question-and-answer period, followed by an autograph-signing session for students.

“Davis Vision is proud to be a presenter of this New York Islanders program, as it is dedicated to teaching young minds the importance of literacy through a school assembly run by Islanders players,” said Joseph Carlomusto, ABOC, FNAO, Davis Vision president and chief executive officer. "Through our support of community outreach activities like this, Davis Vision is providing children and their parents with a better understanding about the importance of good vision, healthy eyes and healthy lives," he said.

"This was a terrific day for the students," said Old Country Road School Principal Anthony Lubrano. "It provided an opportunity to have role models read to the students and hopefully excite them to pick up a book and read on their own. As a school-wide event, it unites us to focus on literacy."
