Davis Vision, Eyemasters and the Neighborhood Longhorns Provide Free Vision Screenings to Austin Children

Focus on America® Outreach Program Provides Upwards
of $144,000 in Free Services to Over 1,000 Children

Plainview, NY. (October 5, 2009) - National vision insurer Davis Vision, a Highmark Company, partnered with sister company EyeMasters and the Neighborhood Longhorns to provide free vision screenings for children in the Austin Independent School District. The events kicked off a new partnership between the Neighborhood Longhorns and Davis Vision.

The screenings reached uninsured or underinsured children at four area schools over two days. Volunteers from the three organizations travelled to each school to conduct the screenings and educate participants on the importance of proper vision care. Children requiring follow-up care received a voucher for a free comprehensive exam and eyeglasses.

A total of 1,211 children were screened, with 43% requiring follow-up care. Those 520 children received a voucher to be used at a local EyeMasters store.

"Vision is an essential part of childhood learning, so it is crucial for children to have their eyes tested on a regular basis," said Melissa Jones, Davis Vision senior account executive. "The children who received a voucher for a free eye exam and eyeglasses will now be able to see the blackboard and read books for the new school year."

Davis Vision's Focus on America® outreach program targets underprivileged children across the country. Recognizing the importance of vision health for all individuals, the program provides free eye care services to communities in need. The services provided represent a contribution of over $144,000 to the community.

"So many of our students need assistance and just don't have the support to get vision care," said Azucena Garcia, principal of Sanchez Elementary School. "This is a true gift for our students and will help with their academics."
