Davis Vision Donates $300,000 to North Shore-LIJ

SYOSSET, N.Y. (April 22, 2010) - Davis Vision recently contributed $300,000 to the North Shore-LIJ Health System for the purchase of ophthalmology equipment, including a $150,000 cataract surgery simulator used to teach residents in training. The gift is part of a $2 million donation Davis Vision pledged to North Shore-LIJ in 1997. The company's support has enabled North Shore-LIJ's Department of Ophthalmology to further develop its programs and services, and build a state-of-the-art Eye Surgery Center at Syosset Hospital.

Davis Vision's President Steve Holden and Dan Levy, OD, assistant vice president of professional affairs, recently toured the Eye Surgery Center at Syosset Hospital and presented the $300,000 check to North Shore-LIJ. Accepting on behalf of the hospital were Ira Udell, MD, chairman of ophthalmology at North Shore-LIJ, Samuel Packer, MD, chair emeritus, Michael Fener, executive director at Plainview and Syosset Hospitals, and Vincent Deramo, MD, chief of ophthalmology at Syosset Hospital.

"The donation from Davis Vision has been invaluable to our Ophthalmology Department by helping us invest in the most modern facilities, equipment and treatments available. Their assistance has also allowed us to perform specialized ocular surgeries that few hospitals across the country are able to offer," said Dr. Packer.

Davis Vision has a history of serving their local community as well as communities across the country: free vision screenings for uninsured and underinsured children are regularly held nationwide and employees are active within the community through local soup kitchens and Habitat for Humanity. The North Shore-LIJ Health System and Davis Vision plan to partner for community events in the future, maintaining their relationship and furthering their shared commitment to vision care.
